Justin Tomlinson MP Calls For A National Insurance Scheme For Schools Trips

A national insurance scheme could be set up by the Government to help pay for all schools to take children on trips.

Schools Minister Sarah Teather has promised to look at the plan.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson said the high cost of minibus insurance for teachers limits the number of outings.

During a debate on outdoor learning, he said: "If something could be done about that, it would make a considerable difference. It often costs more than £1,000, and is a particular barrier to short trips to local open spaces. If the cost proves to be a barrier, it limits access.

"I believe the Department for Education should negotiate a national insurance contract to cover all schools. Putting all those insurance renewals together would be one hell of a piece of buying power."

Ms Teather said: "I will examine the suggestion about an insurance scheme for schools that is bought en bloc, to see if anything can be done."

She told the debate that the White Paper on schools refers to "access to live theatre" and encourages appreciation of the visual arts like painting, museums and libraries.

Ms Teather said getting children out of the classroom was something "the Government take very seriously".
