Justin Tomlinson MP Supports Youth Sport Swindon Bid

Justin Tomlinson MP has supported a local bid to secure Big Lottery money for a project called "Youth Sport Swindon".

This project aims to:

1.  Improve the quality of life of disadvantaged young people, and the communities in which they live, by delivering sport, volunteering and leadership programmes, which will nurture sporting talent and develop community leaders.

Quality of life will improved by meeting the 4 outcomes of:

  • Reduction in anti social behaviour
  • Improvement of health
  • Increase in volunteering
  • Increase in leadership skills

2.  Bring together four existing sporting programmes

  • Twilight Football
  • Streetgames
  • Woodland games
  • Muslim Youth development project.

These programmes are currently run across 4 different sections of the council/partners. All involve different groups of young people doing sport/exercise and associated courses as a way of reducing anti social behaviour, improving skills and improving health. This should improve partnership working, efficiency and learning from each other as well as helping to brand Sport for young people in Swindon. Current funding for all 4 projects comes to an end in 2011.

Justin Tomlinson MP, "I am very keen to support this excellent application for Big Lottery funding.  I have highlighted in Parliament that through sport we can reduce anti-social behaviour, improve health, increase volunteering and increase leadership skills.  For example, the Twilight football project has reduced anti-social behaviour by 19%, showing that young people who are engaged in positive activities can make a real difference."

"I very much hope local residents will take the time to support this application."
