Swindon Advertiser Column - Post Office Scandal Has Caused Untold Damage

Swindon Advertiser Column - Post Office Scandal Has Caused Untold Damage

The news this week has been dominated by the appalling treatment of sub-postmasters who were accused of theft based on flawed evidence from the Post Office’s Horizon IT system. The recent ITV programme on this has been excellent. These prosecutions have caused untold damage to the lives of innocent people over the past 20 years – leading to some being ostracised by their communities, marriages breaking down, and, sadly, even suicide. This is one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our his...

Justin Marks Less Survivable Cancers Day In Parliament

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson spoke with representatives from leading cancer charities at a special event to mark Less Survivable Canders Day. The day is organised by the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce (LSCT), representing the six less survivable common cancers: cancers of the lungs, liver, brain, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach. Over 90,000 people will be diagnosed with one of these cancers in the UK each year – a quarter of all cancer diagnoses. Sadly, only 16% of people diagnosed wit...

Justin Meets Westrop School In Parliament

North Swindon MP welcomed students from Westrop School to Westminster as part of his school engagement work. The pupils enjoyed a tour of Parliament, where they learned more about the history of Parliament and its importance to our democratic system. Following this I joined them in the Parliamentary Education Centre for a lively Q&A. The visit was part of Justin's wider work with local schools, teaching them how Parliament works and how MPs support their constituents. Justin Tomlinson said: ...

Swindon Advertiser Column - Labour Councillors Need To Come Out Of Hiding To Resolve Waste Issue

Swindon has made the headlines this week and for all the wrong reasons. According to the hapless Labour Group who run Swindon Borough Council, the collection rate for waste & recycling is 99%. Talk about living on another planet. My inbox, Robert Buckland MP’s inbox and social media has been flooded with complaints & photos of missed waste sitting on the streets for weeks. Over Christmas, people visiting the cemetery were met with grotesque scenes of overflowing bins which were attractin...

Swindon Advertiser Column - Another Year Gone In A Flash

2023 is coming to a close – another year gone by in a flash. As we head into the new year, it is an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by. As many will know, I am a passionate champion of independent businesses – particularly in the retail, hospitality, and leisure sector. Throughout the year I have visited and supported many of Swindon’s amazing small independent businesses, such as Burt’s Books, Cabin and Cowshed, Highworth Emporium, Gurt Wings, Sugar Shack, and Café Vialottie. Earlier th...

Swindon Advertiser Column - New Rules Seek To Balance Need For Housing And Providing Communities With Powers To Block Poor Quality Development

Ahead of the final few shopping days before Christmas, there has been very welcome news that inflation has fallen again, now down to 3.9%. This is the lowest level it has been since 2021, before Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine sent global energy costs soaring. This is because we took the difficult decisions to get inflation under control, all measures opposed, as ever, by Labour. This is key for the economy as it eases the pressure on cost of living and increases the likelihood that mortgag...

Swindon Advertiser Column - Government Building On Its World Leading Animal Welfare Work

Swindon Advertiser Column - Government Building On Its World Leading Animal Welfare Work

During my 13 years as an MP, some of the most popular campaigns residents contact me about are ones relating to animal welfare – the love people have for animals and the passion they have for ensuring their welfare is very clear to see. As an MP I have worked with several different organisations to support campaigns on a variety of animal welfare issues. One campaign I have consistently supported is for an end to the cruel practice of puppy farming and puppy smuggling. For nearly a decade I have...

Justin Thanks Residents For Generous Response To Gift Appeal

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has welcomed another great response to the Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service Christmas Gift Appeal. It is the fourth year that Justin and the SDASS have teamed up to ask people to donate Christmas presents for families supported by the organisation both in the refuge and the wider community. Justin’s office was opened up as a drop off point for donations. As with previous years, residents were very generous with a plethora of gifts left under the Christmas ...
